Long Platform

AWARENESS

I’ve noticed that currently there’s a lot of important academic information buried within the meeting minutes of committees. I would increase awareness of these through doing what I call an ‘Academic Report’, where I would report on important decisions in the Faculty of Science & the Academic Committee meetings (e.g. discussions on new courses being made), two places that I would represent SUS in, as well as decisions made for academic events within SUS, and making this easily available to all members of SUS.
Additionally, because McGill is such a large university, there’s a lot of resources, and they can definitely be hard to keep track of — to increase awareness on different opportunities, I would work with the VP Communications to create an academic event calendar with all the upcoming events for SUS members on campus and update it regularly. These events would be further subdivided into categories like ‘Life Sciences’, ‘Physical Sciences’, ‘Networking Opportunity’, etc, and provide students with a greater sense of what McGill has to offer.

EXPERIENCE

Learning should not only be in the classroom; it should be through experiences, and as SUS VP Academic I would work to promote these types of experiences via establishing an SUS Job Shadowing program. I would also work with the SUS Internship and Field Studies office to promote and increase awareness about the opportunities that exist already.
Also, knowing that SUS encompasses many different fields of science, as VP Academic, I would collaborate with departmental councils and advisors on smaller events that would benefit individual programs as well as inter-departmental events.

STUDENT FEEDBACK & REPRESENTATION

Finally, one of the core tenets of my platform is to get feedback from the SUS members I represent. I’ll achieve this through regularly conducting polls, as well as by physically tabling outside of the SUS office in the Burnside building.
This is key for being a good representative at committee meetings, where discussion is had about new courses and academic policies. For events like Academia Week, which have a specific theme, I would take into account all student input on both theme as well as the events that SUS members wanted to see within the event.

Experience

Currently, I’m the VP Internal of FUSS (First-Year Undergraduate Science Society Council), where I’m working to plan events like Meet Your Major and Office Hours. Outside of SUS, I’m also the VP Public Relations of the McGill Students’ Chapter of Scientista, where I’ve helped plan and host events.
